Mojito Mocktails

Regardless of whether or not I’m choosing to have alcohol at any given moment, I always love to celebrate things! Maybe it’s a big holiday, event, or even just a small win for myself or someone I love. And when I’m not choosing alcohol, I still want something to sip on that screams CELEBRATION. Many of the mocktail mixes I’ve seen have tons of refined sugars and junky ingredients, so I have been experimenting more and more with my own mocktail recipes. This one – a refined sugar-free, refreshingly minty Mojito Mocktail – is a new favorite.

Though I drink at times, when I’ve applied mindfulness to it I have noticed that reducing alcohol (or giving it a rest for a while) just makes me feel better. I have friends who’ve attested that their sleep, energy, exercise, and overall habits have gotten much stronger when they limit alcohol too. So if you drink but are looking for a little change up, or you don’t drink and you’re always on the hunt for fun mocktails, this recipe is for you!

Honey simple syrup

To keep my mocktail refined sugar-free, I use my delicious honey simple syrup in this recipe. Now, simple syrup recipes are as easy as they come — a 1:1 ratio of water and sweetener (traditionally white sugar). So you might not have thought of making syrup with honey. Because when you think of adding honey to something cold, I’m sure you imagine how it seizes up and doesn’t incorporate at all! But making it into syrup before adding it to a cold liquid allows it to incorporate easily and keeps these mojito mocktails refined sugar-free.

I love using a mild flavored, light, raw honey in this recipe. My favorite one is OneRoot Raw Canadian Wildflower Honey.

How to muddle mint

The other key to this mocktail is the mint! Mojitos are known for their muddled mint and this mocktail is no exception. To muddle just means to break down and apart, which is what you want to achieve with the mint. When you do that, it releases all its fragrant herbaceous oils into your beverage. Though you can buy -muddlers” specifically for this purpose, I find it’s easy to just use the back of a wooden spoon too.

How to shake a cocktail

If you have a cocktail shaker, great! If not, no problem. An insulated travel coffee mug (I think we all have one of those, lol) works perfectly! Simply pour your liquid into it, add ice, pop the lid on and shake it up. Works just like a shaker 😉
