Hi Creators,

We heard your feedback that the timeline to keep previously published 2D items on sale was too short. To give you more time to adjust to the changes, we are extending the deadline from March 20 to July 31, 2026 to get a Premium 1000 or 2200 subscription in order to keep previously published 2D avatar items on sale.

This means that your previously published 2D items will remain on sale without requiring an active Premium 1000 or 2200 subscription until July 31, 2026. We will start delisting items that don’t meet the Premium criteria on August 1st, 2026.

Hi Creators,

Since yesterday’s announcement, we’ve seen some misconceptions circulating in the community and want to provide immediate clarity on three specific points to ensure everyone has the correct information:

1. Purchased 2D avatar items remain unaffected - If a player has already purchased a 2D avatar item, it will remain in their inventory and continue to be wearable even if the creator does not have an active Premium subscription. Purchased items are not affected by these changes.
2. Uploading does not require Premium - You can still upload 2D avatar items without a Premium subscription. Premium is only required to publish items for sale on the Marketplace and to keep existing published items on sale.
3. Regions where Premium is not available - If you are in a region where Premium is not available, you will not be required to have a Premium subscription to keep your existing 2D avatar items on sale or to publish new items.

Roblox players and avatar creators expect a Marketplace filled with high-quality, original items and a safe environment where creativity can thrive. Today’s update is a critical step in our ongoing work to prioritize platform safety through more creator accountability, with more safety protections in the coming months.

To proactively address Marketplace safety, we are updating our 2D avatar item uploading and publishing requirements, along with the reduction in 3D avatar item upload fees, which go into effect immediately.

What’s changing

Uploading avatar items

Both 2D and 3D avatar items will have an upload fee which will serve to limit misuse of the Marketplace and avatar items, with the goal of attracting committed and legitimate creators.

We’re adding an upload fee to 2D t-shirts and reducing the 3D avatar item fee:

• All new 2D avatar items now have a 10 Robux upload fee.
• 3D avatar items upload fee is now 300 Robux, reduced from 750 Robux. All other 3D upload requirements remain unchanged.

Publishing 2D avatar items to sell

• Premium: An active Premium 1000 or 2200 subscription will be required to publish new 2D avatar items or to keep published 2D items on sale.
  • Just like 3D avatar items, this requirement increases accountability and safety, and it ensures the Marketplace has content from active creators.
  • Any 2D items already purchased by users will not be removed from their inventory even if the creator does not have a Premium subscription or the creator’s Premium subscription lapses.
• Publishing advance: Publishing 2D avatar items will also require a 10 Robux publishing advance. These fees also help deter misuse of the system and encourage legitimate creators.
• Dynamic price floor: Like 3D avatar items, 2D avatar items will have a dynamic price floor, starting at 5 Robux, to support healthier prices and outcomes for both 2D and 3D avatar items.

Today’s changes build on safety work already underway. As an example, last month, we launched proactive avatar moderation, which automatically scans avatars for Community Standards violations every time they’re updated, before other users see them. Accounts found in violation have their avatar reset and are notified of the specific policy breached, creating a faster and more consistent enforcement loop.

Timeline

• March 5, 2026 (Today): New requirements take effect for all new 2D clothing uploads and publishing. The new reduced 3D avatar item upload fee will also go into effect today.
• By March 19, 2026: To keep your existing, already-published 2D clothing on sale, you must have an active Premium subscription.
• On March 20, 2026: We will begin delisting 2D clothing from the Marketplace and within experiences if the creator has not met the Premium requirement. To be clear, items purchased by users will remain in their inventories.

What’s next

Today’s changes are a step towards more rigorous safety protections across the Marketplace. In the near future, we’ll be introducing additional safety measures for publishing both experiences and avatar items alike. More details to come.

Why is Roblox adding all of these fees?

• Upload fees and publishing advances have long existed for various 2D and 3D avatar items, except for 2D t-shirts. We are closing this gap because modest upfront investments are expected to deter and raise the cost of violating our policies, while also encouraging legitimate creators to be more intentional about what they publish.

Why are 2D and 3D fees different?

• Specific fees reflect the different technical resources required to moderate 2D and 3D items. However, our goal with this update is to raise the bar for 2D avatar items by adding creator accountability that helps protect the entire community from system misuse.

Does this mean 2D clothing is being phased out?

• As we shared in our recent update on dynamic head migration, we are not phasing out 2D clothing. Our goal is to support 2D clothing as a part of our avatar ecosystem - meaning 2D clothing will continue to work exactly as it does today, with the only changes being the updated economic and publishing requirements we are introducing.

Will 2D clothing purchased by users be taken away if the creators do not meet the new requirements?

• No. We will not remove items purchased by users from their inventory and they’ll remain wearable.

Why is Premium a requirement for publishing items on the Marketplace?

• We care about creating a Marketplace with items that people love and where creativity is protected. We also care about ensuring the Marketplace remains a safe and civil space for all. Requiring that creators have Premium brings more accountability to the ecosystem, ensures the catalog reflects content from active Roblox users, and motivates creators who want to sell in the Marketplace to publish items they believe will sell.

  Premium has been a requirement for creators that want to monetize their 3D creations on the Marketplace and we want to expand it to 2D clothing based on the positive impact we have seen for mitigating misuse of 3D items.

What happens to my published items if my Premium subscription lapses?

• Similar to 3D assets, if your subscription lapses, your published items will be taken off-sale. You will need to manually put them back on-sale once your subscription is renewed. No new fees will be required.

Why does Roblox have a publishing advance?

• When the number of items in a single category goes up faster than community interest in that category, it can make it harder for people to discover unique items and for creators to earn. A publishing advance allows us to raise the bar on selling in the Marketplace with a goal of incentivizing more original and unique creations. You can learn more about the publishing advance here.

Is Premium subscription required to publish or keep items on sale for those who are in Vietnam where Premium isn’t available?

• No. Premium isn’t required for publishing new 2D avatar items and keeping their published items on the Marketplace.
